Basic information about being a volunteer

  • Proleilu, or youth work, is about volunteering for the benefit of Aholansaari.
  • The workshops last for a week at a time. A maximum of 9 volunteers will be taken for one week.
  • As a volunteer, you earn accommodation and full board at Aholansaari by doing the volunteer work according to the daily programme.
  • You must work 6 hours a day. You also earn one day off for the work you do.
  • Volunteers will stay in shared accommodation, where there will be no night supervision. However, you are expected to sleep enough to be able to participate in the day's work. At night, there is always a full-time staff member on the island who can be contacted in case of an emergency.
  • Full board includes breakfast, lunch, a daily drink, dinner and evening snack.
  • Volunteers have the opportunity to take a sauna. Girls and boys have different shifts. Underage volunteers are not allowed to swim alone. However, swimming in the sauna and during free time is at your own risk.
  • During your free time, you can participate in island events and use the island's public facilities and outdoor play equipment, with consideration for other guests on the island.
  • Minors must fill in a participation card, which must be signed by a parent or guardian. Minors participate in the event with the permission and under the responsibility of their guardian.
  • Volunteers have accident insurance. However, it does not cover movable property or illness. Therefore, you are also recommended to take out your own insurance.
  • Please arrange your arrival well in advance with the volunteers. You can get to the island with the regular ferry services, check the timetables before you arrive. Shuttles are only available on Tuesdays from Nilsiä bus station.
  • Proleilu is completely drug-free. Use or possession of drugs may result in removal from the prole week.
  • Bring suitable equipment for indoor and outdoor work (dirt-resistant work clothes, sturdy shoes, rubber boots, raincoat, headgear) If possible, please bring your own work gloves. If the work requires protective clothing, it can be provided by Aholansaari.
  • During work, you should be available, but don't spend time on the phone.
  • You must follow the instructions of the proleaders, the leaders of the action.
  • Remember that as a prolena you are a volunteer at Aholansaari, so you are responsible for the reputation of Aholansaari, so please behave in a proper, polite and considerate manner.
